Overcoming Our Insecurities
Life is full of obstacles that challenge us. Overcoming them allows us to enter into what God has in store for us. In these five days we will talk about some of them, starting with one of the most common: our insecurities.
We all face insecurities, no matter who we are, what we do, or whether or not we are doing well in life. Insecurities affect us in our journey and try to limit us and disconnect us from God's purpose.
In Mark 9, we see the disciples arguing about which of them is the most important. This conversation arises due to the fact that Jesus did not take them all to witness the transfiguration.
If we were in the place of those nine disciples who stayed behind, we would probably think, "Are the other three his favorites? I also left everything to follow Jesus, why were they chosen and not us?"
When Jesus asked them what they were talking about on the road, they were silent. They felt ashamed that they had been arguing about who was the greatest. In fact, they had not realized that they were walking with the most important person of all.
Insecurity leads us to lose our identity, to constantly question our abilities, to compete with others, and to live by comparing ourselves. It leads us to seek the wrong approval and makes us feel incapable and inadequate, until it finally stagnates and limits us.
If, through Jesus, we do not overcome our insecurities, the enemy will use them to make us believe that we cannot be used by God.
So how do we overcome them?
1. By understanding that insecurity does not discard us.
Jesus did not abandon his disciples when he saw them insecure, but continued to teach them with grace and mercy. Before God we have the freedom to be vulnerable. He knows our limitations, but does not despise us for them, and works through them.
2. Understanding what greatness really is.
Insecurity leads us to seek positions we don't need. The greatest title has already been given to us through Jesus: we are children of God. True greatness is what we find in him, which he deposited in us and which reflects his kingdom.
Jesus, despite being the greatest, the King of kings, put his whole life at the service of others. Do you want to overcome your insecurities? Keep serving others!
3. Understanding what Jesus accomplished for us
As believers, we can live through the cross through which Jesus made us children of God and co-heirs with Christ of all His promises. There is no greater position than that!
When insecurities knock at the door of your life, remember that you are chosen and forgiven. Pray, serve, and give God your thoughts. He will bring confidence in the areas of your life where you feel insecure.
May your security be found only in Jesus.
Prayer: Father, help me to recognize my insecurities for what they are, as normal emotions we all face. Give me new convictions to find my security in you alone. Help me to enter into what you have prepared for me. In Jesus' name. Amen.
