A Journey of Life and Leadership: A 5-Day Reading Plan by Jeremy Norton

DAY 1 OF 5

All Things to All People

Whenever we enter into a new context, culture or environment, we face insecurity. We pretend that everything’s fine but inside we’re struggling. If we’re really honest, many of our insecurities stem from pride. The pressures related to cultural differences can reveal unresolved sin that we may have been ignoring for years. That’s when we need to rely on Christ’s strength to engage this new group of people.

When I moved to Alaska, this was my reality. God showed me that by accepting His call to serve this new community, I would have to take some serious steps toward understanding them, engaging in their values, and adapting to their way of life. Paul’s call to the Corinthian church is fitting in this regard, to “become all things to all people...for the sake of the gospel” (1 Cor. 9:22-23). I would have to swallow my pride and insecurity and embrace a new point of view. The first few months were difficult, but the ability to bridge the relationship gap for deeper conversations was worth it.

God is faithful, reminding us that the Gospel remains primary, that everyone needs Jesus, but that there are many ways to lead someone to Him. He is faithful in the grace He shows us. May we choose to show grace to all people with His Gospel, and for His glory.

In which context, culture, or environment do you struggle? Which demographic or people group do you struggle fitting in with the most? How can God help you bridge that gap today?

Pray: Lord, help me face my insecurities. Convict me if they are centered in pride. Help me value and serve all people as You do. Help me be all things to all people, so that I might reach them with Your Gospel. Show me how to bridge these relationship gaps. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
