Making Room

DAY 2 OF 5

The Light

John continues our journey into who Jesus is, and this time he highlights that Jesus is the life and light of all men. That light didn’t just remain in heaven but shines in the darkness. Think about what light is for us today: it guides us, reveals things to us, helps us see, and brings life to us. True light – gives life. This is the way of life intended by our Heavenly Father. This is the light of humankind, the way to a life that makes all things come into sharp focus. The true life found in relationships comes to light when we follow this light, the true life found in our career comes to light when we follow this light, the true life in our daily lives comes to light when we follow this light. We find the meaning in why we are here when we follow this light.

But John tells us the other side of the story. When this light came to earth, some did not believe or receive him. Can you see the choice we have? We can allow Jesus the “light of the world” to be everything he is in our lives, to light up our path, to guide us, to be the life that we need, or we can choose to remain in darkness. It’s our choice. Some may prefer to stay in the dark, but to stay in the dark is to remain in falsehood. Jesus comes as light to shine what is the true way to a good life.

But to those who did receive him, those who allowed this light to permeate their whole life, they (and we!) get to become a child of God. This is incredible!  John has just shown us that Jesus is the Son of God from the beginning, and now because he chose to come to earth and shine his light into the darkness, to be the light of the world that overcame the darkness, we get to join the family!
