Neighbor Groups: Empower Communities نموونە
Avoiding Burnout
Yesterday, we talked about how the early church empowered people to use their God-given gifts to make a difference. As a result, widows were supported, the Church grew, and the leaders were able to continue their mission.
Let’s imagine for a second that leaders had held onto control, not empowering others to intervene. Over time, the leaders would likely have become ineffective, burned out, and overwhelmed. And the people would probably have felt frustrated, resentful, and disempowered.
If we’re not careful, we can easily end up in that situation. When we try to solve problems in our own strength, we can become easily exhausted and frustrated. In the Old Testament, Moses experienced this firsthand when he was leading the Israelites.
Moses served as a judge for the people, helping them understand God’s will and settle arguments among one another. The problem is that he was doing it in isolation—meaning he was the only person in charge of that important work.
It led to some long hours and a heavy burden for one person to carry. One day, Moses’ father-in-law, Jethro, challenged him to approach it differently. He said:
… “What you are doing is not good. You and these people who come to you will only wear yourselves out. The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.” Exodus 18:17-18 NIV
Moses took his advice and appointed some capable leaders, splitting the responsibility of helping the people.
Imagine the ripple effect that must have had throughout the community. Moses likely felt less burdened and was therefore more effective. The leaders he chose likely felt empowered and energized that they were allowed to play such an important role. And the people probably had a better experience and less wait time as a result.
And that’s why community empowerment is invaluable. Trying to solve problems by ourselves usually only creates problems in our souls. It makes us feel self-important and indispensable when we’re not. It robs others of the opportunity to use their gifts. And it doesn’t serve the people we want to help.
So, today, think about any areas in your life where you’re approaching burnout, resentment, or cynicism. How could you share the burden with others?
Pray: God, remove any pride or self-importance from my soul. Show me any areas where I’m seeking control or hoarding opportunities instead of empowering others. Thank You for the way that You use imperfect people to advance Your perfect plans. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Challenge: Take some time to think about whether there are any areas in your life where you’re carrying too much. Is there any pride that you need to release? How could you empower others to serve alongside you?
