The Choice of Excellenceنموونە
Make Excellent Choices
“And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, so that you may approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.” Philippians 1:9-11 ESV
When you visit certain online sites that are selling different brands or styles of the same product they will often distinguish them by “good, better and best”. Not good or bad, but good or best. This could be applied to almost every choice we make in life. Occasionally we have a choice between good and bad, right and wrong but usually, the choice is between wise and unwise, or good, better, and best. Too often we choose good when we could have chosen a better way or the best way; but good eases our conscience and it is the easier choice, most of the time.
Paul tells us that we should want to approve what is excellent. Make the best choice, not just a good choice. He even tells us that three ingredients to excellent choices are love, knowledge and discernment. These ingredients speak to our motives and our insight. Love speaks to our motives in the choices we make. We are concerned about the impact our choices have on others and not just ourselves. Knowledge and discernment together form the highest form of wisdom which gives us insight on what to do and how to do it. We should live our lives looking to make excellent choices in every decision we face.
