Faith Over Everything

DAY 2 OF 5

Give What You Have.

It seems pretty backwards to give away something you want or want more of, right? How will you get more by reducing the amount you have? Culture tells us to keep what we have, to store up our resources, but, as I once heard someone say, you can’t use the world’s math to get God’s breakthrough. If you want what God has for you, you have to step into another realm of possibility and practice generosity. Proverbs 11:24 puts it this way: “One person gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty.”

Whether it’s in the area of finance, talent, time, or whatever else it might be for you, scripture talks about giving away what you have to serve others. Jesus powerfully demonstrates this as He washes the disciples’ feet in Matthew 13. The One who heals, multiplies a few loaves of bread and a couple of fish to feed thousands, and forgives sin also serves His disciples by washing their feet. He freely gave the miraculous things, of course, but He also freely gave the practical things. Washing feet is not glamorous work, but nothing was beneath Him. Jesus would stop at nothing when it came to doing the will of the Father.

Giving what we have and serving others doesn’t force God’s hand or pull in extra blessing because we’ve earned it. It’s actually communicating your trust in God that He is your provider, He is with you, and you lack nothing—just like Psalm 23:1 says. When we hold onto what we have, we end up like the man who hid his talent. What we have can’t grow or multiply unless we do something with it. You don’t need a big audience; you just need to look around you. Who can you be a blessing to? When we’re not afraid to serve others and give away what we have, it shows God that we’re ready for more.

Exercise your faith today by giving something away, serving your neighbors, or getting involved in an area you might not think is “your thing.” Tell God you trust Him by putting to work what He has already blessed you with.
