Worship at the Well

DAY 9 OF 50

Jesus spoke about unity in some of His sermons and conversations. From these, we understand that unity is multifaceted. While praying for His disciples, Jesus’ plea was, “that they might be one, even as the Father and I are one”. Here we learn that unity is spiritual, relational, and cohesive in purpose.

This is an amazing reality shared between Father and Son, which He wants us to experience. Yet, in a particular conversation with the Pharisees, Jesus provided another interesting perspective on unity. Surprisingly, Jesus used the devil’s kingdom as an example to explain the power and purpose of unity. In a dialogue where Jesus rejected the Pharisees claim that He cast out a demon as Beelzebub, He taught them, “every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and a house divided against itself falls. If Satan is also divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand?” (Luke 11:17, 18).

Jesus made a clear point – without unity, there will be division! Wherever division exists, whether in a large kingdom with many people and multi-levels of authority or in a small house with few people and one level of authority in parents, there will be two effects: devastation and collapse. Oh how unity is essential, yet we often act like only self is essential. Unity maintains order and stability and prevents problems. The enemy knows how beneficial it is, that’s why he has copied and implemented it in his own evil kingdom. If he knows, how much more should Christians value, implement, and safeguard unity! Let us advance the Kingdom of God with unity!
