Daily Bible Reading – August 2021: God’s Word of Promiseنموونە
August 28
Introduction
The book of Numbers tells the story of the Israelites during the nearly forty years from the time they left Mount Sinai until they reached the eastern border of the land God had promised to give them. It includes various instructions for living as God’s holy people. Today’s reading describes the rules for those who take a vow to become a Nazirite (see the reading from August 26 which recounts the birth of Samson who became a Nazirite). Today’s reading concludes with a priestly blessing.
Today’s Scripture Reading
Numbers 6:1-27
Today’s Key Verse: Numbers 6:26
May the LORD look on you with favor and give you peace.
Reflect
What instructions are given for those who make a special vow to become a Nazirite? Within your community of faith, do people take vows in connection with various acts of service? The priestly blessing which concludes today’s reading is often used in many faith traditions as a benediction. The word translated as “peace” in verse 26 is from the Hebrew word “shalom,” which speaks to total well-being, not simply an absence of war. Have you heard these words spoken in your community of faith? What does this blessing mean to you?
Pray
Holy God, you are gracious and kind. May you look with favor upon my words and actions today and surround me with your peace. Amen.
Prayer Concern
Those who take vows, dedicating themselves to a life of service to God
Tomorrow’s Reading
Isaiah 29:15-24: Isaiah offers words of hope for the future.
