Daily Bible Reading – August 2021: God’s Word of Promiseنموونە
August 20
Introduction
The book of Joshua is the story of the Israelite conquest and occupation of Canaan under the leadership of Joshua, Moses’s successor. Today’s reading recounts the fall of Jericho, a city a few miles west of the Jordan River. For six days, the Israelite army marched around the walled city of Jericho. On the seventh day, while the priests blew their trumpets, the people marched around the city seven times. When Joshua gave the signal, the priests blew their trumpets again and all the people shouted as loud as they could. The walls of Jericho fell flat. Rahab and her family were saved.
Today’s Scripture Reading
Joshua 6:1-27
Today’s Key Verse: Joshua 6:19
“Everything made of silver, gold, bronze, or iron is set apart for the LORD. It is to be put in the LORD’s treasury.”
Reflect
Destroying a city and everything in it showed that it belonged to the Lord and could no longer be used by humans. These actions signaled a complete break with the condemned pagan culture of Jericho. How did Rahab help the Israelites? What did Joshua do for her in return for her help?
Pray
Almighty God, you have the power to tumble walls between nations and cultures. Place me in relationship with those who are different from me, that I may know the breadth and depth of your love through the diversity of your people. Amen.
Prayer Concern
Those who experience class discrimination
Tomorrow’s Reading
Joshua 21:43—22:9: The Israelites settle in the Promised Land.
