Key Themes: Key Topical Themes Of The Bibleنموونە
God’s Name
Name means more than what we call someone. It includes authority, as in ordering something to be done in the name of the commander; and reputation, as in damaging someone’s good name. In the Old Testament part of the Bible, God had a name. In our English Bibles, that name is shown as LORD in all capitals. At other times our Bibles say, Lord, which still refers to God, but is not God’s name.
In our chapter today, Solomon says David wanted to build a house for the name of the LORD. In other words, he will build a house that would enhance God’s reputation and show surrounding nations His authority. It would make it clear that Israel belongs to the LORD and depends on Him.
According to 1 Corinthians 3:16, God’s temple is now the people who have trusted Jesus. We can raise or lower God’s reputation. We can do things that acknowledge God’s authority or ignore it. Are you honoring God’s name with your life?
