Week 28
Matthew 7
The Solid Rock
Chapter 7 ends Christ’s sermon on the mountain and He concludes His sermon by contrasting two kinds of individuals: one who listens to His words and obeys them, and one who does not. The one who listens and obeys is wise and his life is built on the firm foundation of the truth of the Word of God. The difference is seen not when life is going well, but rather when the storms of life strike.
When our lives are trusting in the firm foundation of the Words of God, we are able to weather the storm. But if we don’t have a firm foundation, then, like the man who built his house on the sand, the Lord says, “And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it” (Matthew 7:27). This is a sobering warning of the turmoil we can face in life when we insist on living our own way—when we build our house on the “sands” of anything apart from Jesus.
In our world today there is no shortage of opinions on how to live your life, spend your money, raise your family, or what you say, think, or believe. There is, however, one source of truth we should listen to, there is only one voice that matters— the voice of our Lord, Creator, and Savior. Our hope is built on nothing less, and He is the solid rock on which we stand.
Family Connection: What is the nicest thing someone has done for you? The Bible calls us to treat others how we would like to be treated! What is one way you can do something for someone else this week? How about for someone who maybe isn’t always kind to you? We do this not because we are super awesome, but because God has treated us better than we could ever deserve! He sent His son Jesus to die on the cross FOR us while we were still sinners. Because of His love for us, we can choose to love others!
