Evidence: The Heavens Declare
God, in His mercy and without partiality, has revealed Himself to every human being that ever lived, regardless of lineage or location. Our scripture reading today states this very plainly: one needs only to look around, and look up, to see evidence for the existence of God. (Read Psalm 19:1-4)
Yet even with God’s handiwork so clearly visible, countless deny His reality. To credit God with creation would mean admitting His existence, which for many would be very scary. Very scary, indeed.
Why?
The acknowledgment of God, taken to its logical conclusion, means someone else is in control. This changes every facet of life: friendships, finances, family dynamics, the list goes on and on. After all, if God created all things, then He also created me. And if He created me, then I was created for a purpose. Not only that, I am accountable to Him for fulfilling that purpose. (Read John 1:1-4)
In our video clip, Martin is confronted by his father, who sees Martin’s faith as a threat to his culture, his family, and his future. Instead of arguing with his father, Martin tries to reason with him, referencing the created things all around them as evidence. And in a heartbreaking response, Martin’s father denies him as his son, refusing to even address the illustration Martin presented.
If you are like me, this story line hits close to home. There are those we dearly love who refuse to see the obvious. It might not lead to a complete break in the relationship, but it typically leads to a change in it. Yet we continue to persuade, to reason, and to believe that one day those who we long to know God will no longer deny His existence, but will open their eyes and see His glory through the majesty of His creation. (Read Romans 1:20)
Let us pray:
Heavenly Father, we acknowledge the wonder of the world that You have created. We marvel at the stars above, at the order of the universe, and at the beauty displayed in every detail. Today we lift those in our lives who see all you have made, yet refuse to see You. And we pray for the day when their eyes will be open to see Your glory through Your creation, not only acknowledging You as Creator, but also as Heavenly Father through faith in Your Son.
In Jesus name, amen.
