Creatures of Habit

DAY 1 OF 5

Positive or negative, habits are born out of the brilliance of our Creator. By making it possible for us to develop habits, God saved us from having to weigh the same decisions over and over again. They often become virtually automatic. The key is for Jesus to be reflected in those habits, which will happen if he is the most important thing in our lives. For instance, if we put Jesus first, then telling the truth can become a habit or starting our day with prayer can become second nature.

If you were to assess any person’s habits, you would see what really captures his or her heart. Because our habits reveal what’s important to us. Some might say I’m a pastor, a teacher an attorney, or an electrician. Actually, those are occupations or professions; who I am is a follower of Christ, a child of God. As Scripture says, “God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure” (Eph. 1:5). I belong to God and therefore my desire is to have Jesus reflected in my habits, showing that he is more important to me than anything else. So, every step I take toward forming godly habits is a personal vote for my identity in Christ.

The best way to form godly habits is to focus on who we want to become, not on what we want to achieve. Forming these habits is the path to demonstrating to the world that you are a child of God.

Prayer:

Father, I want the world to know that I am your child. Please help me develop good habits so that I can reflect your glory. Amen.
