‘I know Your silence is not Your absence’
1 John 5:14-15 - “And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.”
We’ve all got those people in our lives where we can totally let our guard down, be completely ourselves, chat chat chat, but then be silent and the silence isn’t even ‘awkward silence’. We’re just comfortable in each other’s company not talking. I love those friendships.
Sometimes I think our relationship with Jesus can be similar. Some days I chat chat chat, let it all out, telling Him all my thoughts and questions and He’s also more vocal and I can hear His voice loud.
Then other times I might not hear much but I know He’s there. I know this can be disheartening at times when we want an answer, clarification, or purely for Him to speak but I know He’s listening. I know He hears every single thing I say and think. I know He’s not going to ‘peace out’ because I’m talking too much or too little. He doesn’t get bored or move on to a more interesting ‘have it all together’ person, or look for ways to get out of the conversation. (Don’t say you haven’t done the same to someone.)
It may seem like silence but His presence doesn’t disappear. Like it says in 1 John - We can take comfort and be confident in that silence. He will speak at the right time. We don’t have to get our knickers in a twist worrying if He’s there anymore. He is and will always be there. Keep speaking and bringing Him all you are, all your thoughts, worries, dreams, questions, agitations, gratitude, admiration, problems, prayer requests, and stories. He wants to hear it all.
Mark 11:24
“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.”
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I thank you for today. Thank you that you never leave me. That you’re always close even when I can’t feel you. Please forgive me for the times I’ve doubted your presence. Remind me in times of doubt or confusion that you’re listening. I will have confidence in You and the timing of when you speak. Amen.
