Family Talk: A Family Devotional on Our Wordsنموونە
Game:
Divide your family into groups of 2 and have each group stand on a kitchen/hand towel (if there is an extra person; the parent can be the judge. If you have a smaller family use a bath towel and put the whole family on the same towel). Start the game by telling the groups they are on a newly discovered flying towel bird, 20,000 feet in the air — but the bird wants to roll over! Teammates must work together to flip over their bird (towel) without anyone falling to their death below. The first team that gets their towel bird flipped without losing anyone over the edge wins!
Message:
It would be silly to talk about saying things that can build each other up or tear each other apart without talking about the most powerful words we can say. Those words are God’s Words. The Bible tells us that His Words, the words that are written down in the Bible, will not fail. When we use our words to agree with and say God’s Words to each other, there is nothing more powerful. In fact, God promises that His Word has to do the job that He sent it to do.
There are many Bible verses that we can practice saying to and about each other. It may seem strange at first, but God is a god of words, and we are made like Him. So even when it seems like a family member isn’t listening, when we say His Words to them we can know that faith and hearing will come. Begin to say things like, “God made you just the way He wanted you. “(Eph 2:10). “God has plans for you that are bigger than you could ever imagine.” (Eph 3:20). “You are an overcomer.” (1 John 4:4). Or “You have been chosen by God.” (John 15:16). And then watch and see how God is faithful to His Word.
When we know what the most powerful words are, we can use them to build each other up and to remind each other of what God says about each of us. We can use them to make each other healthy and whole. We can choose to say kind things, not mean things, even when we are upset. We can believe God’s Words about our family and help to make them a reality.
Question:
Can you remember a time when someone told you something that God said about you? What was it?
Pick one of the verses above or a verse that you know for each family member (or the family member to your right) and declare it over them.
What is your favorite family tradition/thing we do as a family?
Declaration:
Add this declaration to your family prayer now and each night at dinner. “Our family says what God says about us, and those things will not fail.”
Verses:
Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Luke 1:37 For the word of God will never fail.
Isaiah 55:11 The words I say do the same thing. They will not return to me empty. They make the things happen that I want to happen. They succeed in doing what I send them to do.
