Ephesians: Tear Down These Walls

DAY 10 OF 23

The Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, The Starry Night, The Scream. These are some of world’s greatest masterpieces.

A masterpiece is an artist’s defining work, their most significant piece, their greatest contribution to the world. Millions marvel at the artistry and skill of its creator.

In Ephesians 2:10, we are called God’s masterpiece. The word in the original language is poiema. We are God’s painting, his picture, his song, his poem, his masterful creation.

Think about that for a moment... Of all the things God has created… and he has created some incredible things, hasn’t he? A crimson sunset dancing on the horizon. The stars blinking in the night sky. The beauty, texture, and colour of a sunflower. The smell, flavour, and texture of a mango. We could go on!

Of all the incredible things God created, he calls us his masterpiece.

The masterpiece isn’t just you as an individual, but “us” as a people. God has created new people (2 Corinthians 5:17), a new humanity. You are, the church is, God’s masterpiece. A portrait of grace on display for all to see.

The best art works are provocative. They move you, make you do something, think something, be someone! The famous, and anonymous, street artist Banksy is very clever in the way he uses art to provoke and get us to think!

The fact that we are (re)created by God means we have a divine purpose: to do the good things that God prepare for us long ago.

You have a divine appointment and purpose in this world.

For some this means a specific work that God has assigned you to do. But for all of us there is a general call to do good kingdom things like caring for the poor, loving your enemies, blessing your neighbour, serving people, and more.

What this means is that you are unquestionably valuable and important to God. You are his masterpiece, living out his divine purposes in the world!
