Five Keys to Finding Fulfillmentنموونە
Find fulfillment by focusing on what’s most essential
One of the best books I’ve ever read is “Essentialism” by Gregory McKeown. You can listen to the conversation I was privileged of having with Greg about his book on my “Think Eternity with Matt Brown” Podcast.
In his book, Greg shares about a friend who was ready to quit his job, feeling overwhelmed by all the tasks he took on. His friend was the kind of person who didn’t know how to say no, and he would often get asked to do tasks outside his job description and his comfort zone, but he prided himself in always saying yes and taking on more for everyone else. One day, feeling overwhelmed, Greg’s friend felt like he had no other choice but to quit his job. As he took some time away to consider what to do, his mentor told him to write down the tasks he loved and was best, and those which were most valuable to the company and say no to everything else. To his surprise people were fine when he said no to outside tasks, and they actually respected him for it. In addition, he began to love his job again, and was contributing at the highest possible level.
This principle applies to all areas of life. How much fulfillment are we missing simply because we fill our calendars too full?
What would happen if you made a list of what is most important in your life, and began to trim less important activities?:
- What if you prioritized time with your family?
- What if you prioritized connection with your spouse?
- What if you focused on your highest value contributions at your work?
- What if you focused on your most important and life-giving activities?
- What if you got more sleep each night?
- What if you prioritized staying connected to God and your fulfillment in Him?
It’s possible for our lives to be so full of activities, that it keeps us from the fullness of life God wants for us.
What can you do less of, so your life has more room for what matters most? When we create space and margin in our day, it’s amazing how it makes room for us to rediscover our fulfillment.
I hope these past few days have helped you move away from the cares and pressures of your life, and to being to experience the incredible fulfillment God has for you.
