There’s such a disconnect between how we live in the real world and how we interact online. We’ve convinced ourselves that it doesn’t matter, it doesn’t affect other people, and undoubtedly, that it doesn’t impact our visions, dreams, or plans. Seemingly, we’re just speaking, typing, or reacting from the heart.
Jeremiah 17:9 (ESV) says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” It’s not a rousing endorsement, but it’s a perfect tool. The enemy will use your heart to defeat your destiny—not because you are a bad or a wicked person. But the things you feel, say, or share in a moment of reaction will inevitably result in consequences you won’t be able to undo.
Chances are, you may realize your post wasn’t in the best taste. Maybe you delete that comment, but do you follow up with an admission of wrong? Or an apology? As much as we want to take back that moment and its repercussions, oftentimes, we can’t. We’re like toothpaste. Whatever comes out of the tube isn’t going back in.
That means we need to veer away from the reaction towards introspection. Of course, there are times when people have their opinions about me, choose to share them openly, and I want to fire back. These are the moments when Kim is my wisdom. More than once, I’ve said, “Kim, how does this sound?”
She’ll say, “Delete that. You’re bigger than that.”
You need people of wisdom like that in your life, who will tell you that you don’t need to write that or say that.
Proverbs 4:5-7 (ESV) says, “Get wisdom; get insight; do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth. Do not forsake her, and she will keep you; love her, and she will guard you. The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight.” Wisdom says you may have the freedom to say something, but should you? There may be times you are tempted, but wisdom will tell you to rise above it. When you do, you are closer to attaining your vision, your goals, your room with a view.
