Living Unbroken: Reclaiming Your Life and Heart After Divorce

DAY 1 OF 5

You Are Not Alone

You were married; now you’re not.

You once had a life partner; now you don’t. You thought you’d grow old together; now you wonder if you’ll be alone forever.

You feel broken and lost, and you long to feel whole and happy again, but happiness may seem impossible right now. Like a thing of the past. You may feel as if nobody understands your pain. Not a person on the planet can comprehend what you’re really going through.

Friend, I get it. I’ve been there too. That is exactly where I found myself almost five years ago.

I know what it’s like to feel so lost and broken that not only do you think you can never put the pieces of your broken life and family back together, but you also believe you can never be whole, healed, or happy again. I’ve experienced this depth of brokenness, as you likely have, since you’re reading this. But I have good news.

We do not have to live in brokenness. How we live is our choice. Our happiness is up to us, and God has so much goodness in store for us. Life is a gift, and it can be good no matter what we are facing. “How?” you might ask. “Like seriously, how?”

Because we are reassured all throughout the Scriptures that Jesus cares about us. He died to save us, and He lives to heal us and stay by our side.

Two of my favorite go-to verses when hopelessness or sadness tries to creep back in are “He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds” (Ps. 147:3) and “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed” (Ps. 34:18).

It’s comforting to know that even when we feel abandoned, He is still by our side, and even when our hearts are broken and we think we’ll never be happy again, we can trust that in His timing He will help us put the pieces of our hearts back together.

It is possible to be unbroken—to live unbroken, to feel unbroken—despite our circumstances.

My prayer is that this reading plan will help you achieve this incredible feeling, gain a new level of confidence, glean ideas for moving forward, and feel encouraged and equipped to embrace hope and start truly believing happiness and a life you love is within reach. I also hope you will feel less alone in this journey.

Healing Step:

If you haven’t already, start a journal either on your computer or in a handheld notebook. Each time you are feeling overwhelmed with grief, record your thoughts and feelings, prayers, important Scripture verses or devotions you read, and evidence of God working in your life. Include the date for each journal entry.
