Prayer: Father, help me to find joy and satisfaction only in You. I pray that I would draw near to You and be reminded of the ways You have uniquely called me to help build Your kingdom. Amen.
Unwanted Singleness
One of the most dangerous traps we can fall into is comparison. We are quick to compare our “boring, single life” to our friend's “exciting relationships.” Social media amplifies this by showing us all of people’s relational highlights: fun date parties, perfect engagements, and professional wedding videos. This makes it extremely easy to stop and think about all the things that you might be missing out on while being single. However, in doing this, we miss out on what is right before us by believing the lie that a relationship or marriage is what is going to bring us true fulfillment and joy. The enemy loves to come to us in these moments and derail us from our devotion and purposes. But Psalm 18:30 reminds us that God’s ways are perfect. God’s purpose for our life does not hinge on our relationship status. I’m sure most of us know this in our heads, but do we truly believe this?
The reality is that God’s story is SO much bigger than marriage. Marriage is beautiful. When entered incorrectly, marriage is a reflection of the Gospel. God created it! But it isn’t everything. God has uniquely given us seasons of singleness, some longer than others, but He has given us these seasons for a reason. If you are stuck asking the question why, it might be time to start asking the Lord what He can do through you, especially while single.
Look in the Word:
- Look at Ephesians 2:8-10. What do you think are the “good works” God has prepared in advance for you to do?
- Read Psalm 18:30. In whatever season you are in, do you believe this to be true about God? If not, why?
What’s Next?
- Who are you tempted to compare yourself to? What are some specific ways you can fight against envy?
- Make a list of things you are grateful for in the season of life that you are in. Spend some time in prayer thanking God and asking Him what you can do to glorify Him and build His kingdom here on earth.
