DAY 4 OF 90

WEEK 1

Luke 3

Making Way for Christ

In Luke 3, we meet the unforgettable John the Baptist, who is given the unique charge of ushering in Christ’s earthly ministry. John’s whole life was to lay out the “red carpet” or make way for the prophesied King. Even from inside his mother’s womb, John’s entire mission was to point others to Jesus—no matter the ridicule, no matter the cost.

John also lived what we might call a unique lifestyle. He ate wild locusts, drank honey, and wore animal skins; though this biblical description makes him seem a little wild, he is courageous and effective, and his purpose is clear: to become less so Christ can become greater. His ministry carries a lesson for us to this day (John 3:30).

How does John “make way” for Christ? Scripture plainly states that he calls people to repent and be baptized. It is easy to miss the connection between “calling for repentance” and “making way” for Christ. Repentance “makes way” for Jesus to be glorified in our lives, even today. Firstly, repentance puts Christ on display. A life lived in a posture of repentance shows the people around us glimpses of Christ’s character. Secondly, repentance seems hard! In fact, it is so hard, it almost feels like… our only hope is a Savior. A posture of repentance reminds our own hearts of the vast expanse between us and God, and thanks be to Jesus for filling that expanse by His death and glorious resurrection.

May we be a generation who continue to roll out the carpet for this precious King.

Family Connection: Start by making a family tree. Just like us, Jesus has a family history! When we look back at the Old Testament, we read story after story of God using imperfect people to bring about His perfect plan. All along the way, God was planning to send the Messiah, our perfect Rescuer. Jesus’ family line proved he is the Messiah. He has always existed. As the Son of God, Jesus is both fully God and fully human.
