Fight: 2 Timothyنموونە
Worth Fighting For
Do you remember in the movie Frozen when Olaf says, “some people are worth melting for”? Well, what if I told you there were things in Christianity that are worth fighting for? I know that can sound weird because we don’t often associate the word fight with the Christian faith, but we do need to fight for some things. The first of which is The Word. Paul tells Timothy to “...commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” (2 Timothy 2:2). Paul is so passionate about God’s Word that he wants to be sure that Timothy is sharing it with others who will share it with others. We need to pass on what we learn about Jesus! Especially in a world that will do everything it can to shut down what we are saying.
We also need to fight for the right attitude. Paul brings in some cool analogies here of a soldier, an athlete and a farmer. The soldier endures through hardship, the athlete follows the rules and the farmer daily works hard. And if we don’t do these things, we won’t see victory, we won’t win the race and we won’t see fruit. We have to fight to have the attitudes these people have. The world tells us to quit when things get hard, that’s it’s not wrong to bend the rules a little, and that you can just get by by being lazy, let others work hard for you. Paul wants us to do the exact opposite of what the world says.
Third and finally, and most importantly, we have to fight for the Gospel! “Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory (2 Timothy 2:10). The world wants to tell us all roads lead to Heaven, that salvation is in you. Jesus made it very clear that He is the way, the truth and the life. No one goes to the Father except through Him. We have to fight for the truth of the Gospel. And we have to own it. Paul describes it as his Gospel. Let’s fight for what’s worth fighting for!
