A Reason To Hide
Elijah was a prophet who got a fair bit of airtime in the Old Testament – but perhaps the story about him that sticks out to me the most can be found in 1 Kings 19. Elijah had found himself in a cave, on the run, and in an incredibly stressed position. He was afraid for his life, and totally unsure of what was coming next. Secluded, alone, scared and full of doubt. Ever been in a place like that? I know I have.
When Elijah was hiding in the cave and was waiting for God to show up. There was a massive wind that came, but the Lord wasn’t found in that. There was an earthquake that came, but God wasn’t in that either. Then came the fire, and sure enough, God wasn’t found in that either. Finally came a gentle whisper that Elijah heard, and it was the Lord. What I love about this story is that it shows us that in our darkest moments, our most desperate times, when God chooses to whisper to us. He does it to indicate his closeness.
The Bible tells us that God draws near to the broken-hearted, and no matter what you’re going through, God desires to draw near to you in this moment. Whether you find yourself on the run because of something you’ve done, or something that’s been done to you, know that God desires to draw close. Take a moment and listen to what God may want to say to you in this moment.

About this Plan
"Caves" is a project birthed out of a difficult season for the band’s singer and Young Adults Pastor Josh McCabe. Stepping away from ministry for over a year, Caves tells the story of brokenness, uncertainty, and God’s closeness through the midst of a dry season. Join Josh and Caves on this installment of The Overflow Devo and learn more about how the word of God inspired these songs.
