Discipleship: Spiritual Guidance Plan

DAY 2 OF 3

Heartfelt Advice

Now, for starters, let’s clarify that ultimately all accurate spiritual guidance comes from God. We should go straight to the Lord for spiritual guidance. You can find scores of verses punctuating Scripture that highlight this truth. Here are just a few on which you can reflect:

James 1:5 – “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”

Psalm 27:11 – “Teach me Your way, Lord; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors.”

Psalm 86:11 – “Teach me Your way, Lord, that I may rely on Your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear Your name.”

Psalm 16:7-8 – “I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I keep my eyes always on the Lord.

Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight..”

Psalm 25:9 – “He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them His way.”

A quick question:
For what issues are you currently asking from God spiritual guidance?

That said, we do well to receive spiritual guidance to trusted companions in the Gospel way. Sometimes we don’t hear well enough (see Samuel in Day 1) or get distracted by other ‘voices’ or ‘noises’ in our lives. And it can help to have someone listening with and for us… someone to pray for us. This isn’t some novel idea. Scripture is sprinkled with the benefits of good spiritual guidance. Here are some examples:

Proverbs 27:9 – “Perfume and incense bring joy to the heart, and the pleasantness of a friend springs from their heartfelt advice.”

Proverbs 15:22 - “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisors they succeed.”

Proverbs 15:31 – “Whoever heeds life-giving correction will be at home among the wise.”

Proverbs 24:6 - “Surely you need guidance to wage war, and victory is won through many advisors.”

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 – “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labour: if either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.”

Question: Do you have some who play these roles in your life?

If you don’t, we encourage you to find someone today.
