Grace in Weakness
One of the things I love about the Bible is that it’s real. God doesn’t try to airbrush and edit out the weaknesses, shortcomings, and failures of those mentioned in the pages of His Word.
Adam and Eve failed the first test of temptation miserably (Genesis 3)
Abraham and Sarah were too old (Genesis 17)
Noah got drunk (Genesis 9:20-21)
Moses had a speech impediment (Exodus 4:10)
Elijah was suicidal (1 Kings 19:4-8)
Gideon was the least in his family (Judges 6:15)
David committed adultery and then murder (2 Samuel 11-12)
Jonah ran from God (Jonah 1:3)
Peter denied he knew Jesus three times (Matthew 26:69-75)
Paul called himself the worst of sinners (1 Timothy 1:15)
The list could go on and on as drama unfolds on page after biblical page. I’m pretty sure you and I would have fit right in on these pages.
And yet God used each and every one of those people despite their failures. In fact, it seems that God does some of his finest work through our human weakness. The Apostle Paul mentioned a “thorn in the flesh” he had been given to keep him from becoming proud. He prayed 3 different times for the Lord to take it away but received this answer,
“Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9 NLT emphasis mine)
How many times have you and I prayed for the Lord to fix our weaknesses, put us into a different family, remove our warts and blemishes, grant us improved athletic ability, give us more intelligence, to go back and do something over again? And then days turn into weeks…then months…then years. Perhaps when we’re all alone and in a quiet place, we hear those familiar words, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.”
We’ve tripped and fallen into the sins of lust, anger, pride, selfishness, envy, greed, lying, laziness, gluttony, or addiction. We’ll most likely do so again. God’s grace continues to pick us up, dust us off, and send us back into this hurting world where we can be living testimonies of God’s power working in weakness.
God has always been and will always be the main character in this story called Life. What a privilege to see our story used for His glory!
While the world tries to eliminate weakness, God works wonders in the midst of it. When the enemy whispers, ‘no, you can’t’, God responds with an emphatic, ‘YES I CAN!!’
Nuff said.
Prayer…
"Father, thank you for allowing us to experience weakness. Yes, we've often complained about those weaknesses but we know You do your best work through our weaknesses. Help us to see our weaknesses as opportunities rather than hindrances. We receive all the grace and power You have for us this day. May we be people who are known for the power of Christ resting upon us. In Jesus' name, Amen."
