The Art of Neighbouringنموونە
Selfless Love
The Oxford definition of selfless is to be, “concerned more with the needs and wishes of others than with one's own.” Some synonyms of the word selfless are self-sacrificing, self-denying, considerate, and compassionate. Jesus epitomizes selfless love, and we are called to be like Him.
In Philippians 2, we are charged to do nothing out of selfish ambition—rather valuing others above ourselves. This is what it takes to love our neighbors, reaching out to those who so desperately need the love of Jesus in their lives.
Often we fall into the trap of thinking we need eloquence and bulletproof arguments in order to share our faith. More often than not, it is the example set in our lives that draws people first to us and then to Jesus and His love. Biblical foundational truths are indeed vital; however, let the precursor be that of selflessly loving people.
True, authentic, selfless acts of love shown toward our neighbors are hard to deny. Theology can be argued ad nauseam, but a true act of selfless love shown toward another can completely transform the landscape. These acts can pave the way for an individual to come to know the true life-changing, all-loving Father.
In a world abounding in online trolls, public humiliations, bullies of both young and old, we as a people of God need to stem the tide. We need to be able to humble ourselves, putting our differences aside in order to allow for God’s love to grow in our heart for our neighbors, while being bold enough to act on Jesus's love.
Take a moment to read the following prayer, search your heart, and pray a heartfelt version of it, letting it guide your conversation with God:
Jesus, please forgive me where I have let my own biases toward my neighbors affect my willingness to show love, to reach out, and to show God’s love to His world. Help me in the coming days notice my neighbors and highlight moments where I can show love, whether it be as small as a friendly smile. Help me grow in authentic relationships with others who are outside my normal sphere of influence, finding opportunities to show your love to those who do not know you. Let my life be a testimony to unbelievers.
