Romans: Theology for Everybody (1-5)نموونە
“[Romans] is the true masterpiece of the New Testament, and the very purest Gospel, which is well worthy and deserving that a Christian man should not only learn it by heart, word for word, but also that he should daily deal with it as the daily bread of men’s souls.”
-Martin Luther
The book of Romans is a big deal. Trends and fads dominate culture and history. In everything from music to fashion, what is hot today is cold tomorrow. In comparison, the book of Romans has been a favorite in every generation for nearly two millennia and has profoundly shaped the Christian church.
Its impact is far beyond Christianity, as well, transforming entire cultures. Theologian Stanley Stowers has said, "Paul’s letter to the Romans is one of the most influential writings in the past fifteen hundred years of Western culture…More than any other book, Romans has been the forge of the Western psyche.”
In my own life, Romans opened the door to my salvation and relationship with Jesus when I was given a Bible by the girl of my dreams in high school. We are now married and in ministry together, thanks to God’s using Romans 1:6 to flip the switch on my soul while I was sitting in my college dorm one night. I read the words, “And you also are among those Gentiles who are called to belong to Jesus Christ” and have been following Jesus ever since.
I pray that as you open the Word of God, you get a Word from God that deepens your relationship with Him and those around you, ultimately allowing God to work for you, in you, and through you for His glory and your good.
Reflection:
- As you start your study of Romans, skim chapters 1-5 and take notes of what stands out to you or what questions you initially have. Paul was faithful to write down this letter for us to read, and we highly recommend that you dedicate a specific journal to your study of the Bible so that you can keep track of what God reveals to you through it.
