Living Changed: Provisionنموونە
God’s in the Details
A devotional with Amy
It can be difficult to start trusting God with our finances. Even when we take that step of faith to begin tithing, it can be hard to believe He cares about all the little things in our lives. It’s almost as if we think of God in human terms, assuming He doesn’t have time for the details if He’s going to keep the rest afloat. The truth is, God is limitless. He’s capable of orchestrating miraculous blessings while also caring for the smallest things that matter to us.
When my husband felt called into full-time ministry, he took a 90% pay cut. I had no doubt he was where God wanted him. Yet, I was so afraid of what that smaller paycheck meant for our family that it would bring me to tears when anyone brought it up. I had to surrender over and over and choose to trust God’s provision whenever fear started to creep in.
One day in particular, I remember going into my closet and pulling out a pair of tattered black boots. I knew they needed to be replaced, but we couldn’t afford new ones. As I stood there looking at the boots, I began to crumble. My thoughts quickly moved to how we wouldn’t have enough to retire and would end up living in a cardboard box. Even as I spiraled, I knew the only thing that would stop the spinning was Jesus. I told Jesus out loud that I trusted Him to supply for my every need, both big and small. I declared that He alone is our provider, not my husband. As I spoke that truth over my circumstances, I felt more at peace.
About an hour later, I got a text from a friend. She said one of her friends was moving across the country and wanted to give away some shoes in my size. In awe of God, I asked her for a picture of the shoes. She said she couldn’t send me a picture because there were 50 pairs. 50!
All I could do was cry. Not because I was getting new shoes—even though I was definitely excited about that. I cried because God was rewarding our faithfulness to put Him first in our lives and because He was meeting such a specific need. To be honest, it was in my husband’s ability to buy me a new pair of shoes, but God went over and above what was possible by our means to give me more than I could have imagined. At that moment, God helped me understand that His ways are always higher than our ways. His provision is always greater. Through that gift, God was telling me, “I see you and I’m always going to take care of you.”
God sees your situation too, and He’s with you in the middle of it. Just like he cares for the birds of the air and the flowers of the field, He promises to provide everything you need. Don’t worry about tomorrow. Trust God today and let Him handle your future. He delights in giving us gifts that are much more than we could ever imagine.
