I Raised My Handنموونە
The Bible is God’s Word. It is His way of communicating with us. It was written by humans, but inspired by God. It can be intimidating to tackle without a plan, but it is so important to read the Bible on your own and develop an ongoing relationship with Jesus through His word. On this adventure through life and salvation, the Bible acts as a road map and an open line of communication with the creator of the universe. So today we are going to talk about how to get started:
The Bible is split into two major sections: The Old Testament which features stories that include promises of God to all of humanity and the Hebrew people. These stories span from creation to the birth of Jesus. The New Testament which features stories that include the promises of God being fulfilled through the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, as well as, the building of the church.
The Bible is also split into 66 different books. Each book has an earthly author who is speaking to a specific audience. There are also social and cultural situations that may be addressed that are important to understand for context.
Bottom Line: We read the Bible to understand more about God and who He is. It is a glimpse into the heart of God and his love for humanity, which includes you! We are supposed to write His words on our hearts because it will transform our hearts to be more like His.
So, how do I start?
Set apart a time and place every day that is just for reading the Bible. Pray and ask God to speak to you through His word. Use a study Bible (these will have explanations before each book about the author and social and cultural situations, as well as, explanations throughout). Try a reading plan, app, devotional guide, or partner to help guide you through a specific book or topic. Ask yourself questions: What is being said and to whom? What does this say about God and who He is? What does this teach me about myself? How can I apply this to my everyday life? Don’t be afraid to ask questions or share what you have been reading with others. Sometimes the best way to learn is to talk it out. Live what you learn.
Here are some verses from the Bible that explain what it is, and why it is important. Take a moment to read them, and ask yourself some of the questions above.
