DIY for the Soul

DAY 26 OF 34

I tend to turn to the Psalms a lot during prayer. I go to different ones depending on what I’m going through or how I’m feeling. I’ve found myself turning to Psalm 23 a good bit over the past few months because of everything going on around us. It’s comforting for me and so reassuring of the promises that God will get us through what we are going through. He is my shepherd. He is going to lead me beside still waters and lie me down in green pastures, no matter what life throws at me.

Sometimes I will replace certain words with things that resonate with me for whatever the circumstances are. For example, in verse 4, I might replace “valley of the shadow of death” with one of my personal struggles that I am dealing with. It allows me to give those struggles to God and allow Him to fight those for me.

I also love to pray that God will overflow my cup, that my serving and living for God is an overflow of the joy that I find in Christ. When I am not in the word daily and not reminded of the gospel daily, my cup runs dry. There is no overflow for me to pour into others. Praying that my cup would overflow will allow me to better serve my family, friends, and coworkers, and ultimately show the love of Jesus and make much of Him.

That last verse just hits home with me every time. I cannot imagine dwelling in the house of the Lord forever. That promise brings me so much comfort and a sort of “light” at the end of the tunnel. No matter what I am going through right now, surely God will bring me out of it. And even if he doesn’t while I am here on Earth, I will dwell in Heaven forever with Him.

What verses can you use to continuously remind yourself of the promises of God?
