He lives a clean life and plays by the rules. He’s living the American Dream, yet he is constantly awakened to a simmering discontent: “Shouldn’t I be happy? Shouldn’t I feel better about myself? Why can’t I find peace and why do I need more?” His search for contentment goes on even as his stocks rise and windfalls are re-invested. He’ll try anything to find an answer. If someone can point him to the answer, he’ll come running.

Take the modern factors out of the story and you’re left with the rich young ruler. Financially sound … his whole life before him … positioned for power; yet empty. He came so close to the discovery of eternal life, but in the end his holdings held him fast and his condition remained unchanged.
