Forty years in the wilderness can sure take its toll on a failed revolutionary. Forget that young guy who strutted through Pharaoh’s palace – he’s dead. Forget that radical who iced the taskmaster – he’s gone. The great emancipator has become a shepherd. His dreams are dead and buried. Moses knew he had taken his best shot, and blown it. In forty years of desert dwelling, he had done nothing to ready himself for another attempt. He was past his prime. He was grasping at straws. God’s command reduces him to a blubbering child. “What if they won’t listen ... what if they won’t believe?” he cries. “I don’t talk so good, Lord – Oh please, please, send somebody else.”

Moses hasn’t learned much in the wilderness. He still thinks it’s all about him. He still believes that God needs more than a willing vessel. He catalogs his weaknesses, as though human strengths and weaknesses limit God.

None of us bring anything special to the table. Our talents and abilities are God-given. Our knowledge cannot begin to be compared to His wisdom. It’s not about you – it’s Christ, in you!
