Lot had Abraham. Moses had Jethro. Joshua had Moses. Ruth had Naomi. Samuel had Eli. David had Samuel. Elisha had Elijah. Hezekiah had Isaiah. Paul had Barnabas. Timothy had Paul. Apollos had Aquila and Priscilla. The 12 apostles had Jesus.

Who do you have in your life to guide you through the narrows and take you to the heights? Who can hold you accountable? Who can speak with authority in the foggy confusion of conflicting desires? Who do you look up to? Who looks out for you? Do you have a mentor?

Spiritual poverty in the modern American church can be attributed to the depreciation of eldership in our culture. A generation awash in clever technology and scientific arrogance casts aside its fathers, and in so doing, discards true wisdom. The Corinthians were proud of their intellectualism and modernism. They felt that they had outgrown their mentor, like the student who rises to instruct his instructors. Paul’s letter points out their foolishness and sin.

We would do well to learn from their errors. The faster we race into the future, the more apt we are to leave behind the wisdom of the aged. The young and wise captain places youth at the lookout, but experience at the helm.
