Before the Resurrection

DAY 7 OF 7

I woke up this morning thinking of the song I think of every Easter Sunday. “Was it a Morning Like This?” was recorded by Sandi Patti years ago, and it is a song I think about and listen to every Easter. The song asks the question “Was it a morning like this?” referring to the morning of Jesus’ resurrection 2000+ years ago. It is a great song to help contemplate the resurrection.

In past years, I always thought about the superficial aspects of the question, “Was it a morning like this?” Was it clear and cold, grey and raining, sunny and warm, or breezy with scattered clouds? I would walk outside, look around, and wonder if the morning of the resurrection looked and felt like my morning at the time. Of course, this is an unanswerable question since there are no weather records from the first century AD.

But one morning a few years ago, I really thought of the answer to the question for the first time. That day, I realized that the answer to “Was it a morning like this?” is a resounding “YES!” Yes, it was a morning like this, and it does not have anything to do with the weather. “Jesus was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities, and the chastisement for our peace was upon Him.” The resurrection is all about Jesus rising in victory over sin, guilt, and shame. That is what the morning of His resurrection was like. It was a Resurrection Morning. And it is the very same today. This morning and every Easter morning is about His victory over our sin and death. Today is a Resurrection Morning also! That is what the morning was like so many years ago, and that is what it is like this Easter too. It was a morning like this!
