The Gift of One Day

DAY 3 OF 5

The Gift of Trust

Many times when we find ourselves in those places where our total dependence on God becomes more exposed and acute, we start asking Him questions. And the first, most natural question we ask is “Why?” Why, Lord? Why is this happening? Why us? Why me?

Certainly, we asked some of those questions ourselves. We kept pleading with Him. We couldn’t understand. We did not want to be in such a touch-and-go situation with our grandson, and we obviously wanted a positive outcome. Why did it need to be this way? This was supposed to be a happy and exciting time, not painful and hard.

But once God had peeled us far enough away from our home and our normal routine and had shown us just how faithfully and completely He had our backs, we came to the realization that “Why?” is not really the right question. Because once you’ve trusted Him with everything, you can trust Him with “Why?” as well. You don’t need Him to answer that question for you anymore. The things you do next are not dependent on understanding the reason for the situation you are in.

The better questions, really, are “What?” and “How?” What does obedience look like today, Lord? How does my utter dependence on You change how I live these next twenty-four hours? Suddenly your day transforms from chronos—chronological time—to kairos—the opportunities contained within time. To an acceptance of reality. You intentionally ground yourself in the fact that He is taking care of all of it. He is doing everything. He will never lose sight of you or fail to provide what you need. He will be your only source and supply, even if He conscripts other people, even strangers, to be the vehicle. Your only job is to lean on Him and let Him care for you and give Him the opportunity to demonstrate through your life the amazing things He can do.

Your greatest weakness or problem is God’s greatest opportunity to demonstrate His strength in your life. How is your situation helping you learn to depend on God’s strength rather than your own?

About this Plan

The Gift of One Day

Many of us have been blindsided by devastating events, when the world came crashing down around us. In these moments, we can take comfort in knowing God is still writing our story. In this five-day devotional, Kerry and Chris Shook invite you to see the gift of each day.
