Burn Your White Flags (Hebrews)

DAY 8 OF 29

“We don’t read the Bible; the Bible reads us”!

I wonder if this is how you approached the Scriptures today? As we read the Scriptures, they read us. As we read, the Holy Spirit speaks, convicts, and encourages.

How can our Bible reading be stale with this truth in mind? Do you expect to meet God today?

One of the ways that we endure to the end is to nurture a soft heart towards the conviction of the Spirit through the word of God.

We learn a number of important things about God’s word from 4:12.

First, it’s living and active. It’s a source of life, without which we wither and die spiritually (cf. Psalm 1)! Jesus said His words were ‘spirit and life’ (John 6:63), bringing spiritual vitality and life to us. The word is dynamic, not an ancient text with little relevance to our lives. A life that’s not soaked in the word of God will soon dry up. A life that drinks deeply from the river of life remains strong.

Second, it’s an exposing word. Like a sword with two sharp edges, it penetrates. Like a light that exposes darkness, it reveals what is hidden. God’s word brings conviction to the hidden parts, the inner life—our motives, intentions, and heart. It leads us to repentance and Christlikeness. It’s powerful! It changes us!

In the busyness of our lives, it’s all too easy to neglect the disciplines of Scripture reading, meditation, and memorisation. Yet we know the importance of a life lived by the word of God (Matt 4:4).

What a wonderful privilege it is to enjoy God, hear His voice, and respond in obedience as we spend time in the word.

Come expectant. Every day. He will meet you and take you deeper.
