HOW TO ENJOY GOD WHEN I'M ON THE MOUNTAINTOP
Throughout our lives God blesses us with seasons of incredible abundance. How can we remain faithful and continue to pursue intimacy with God in the good times when it seems like we don’t need Him.
The Father loves to bless us, loves to give us gifts and blessings and favour. Why? Because he loves us. He is a good Father who delights in pouring out blessing on his children.
For many people, this is fundamentally difficult to believe. Many find it hard to believe that God would love to love them, or that there would be experiential expressions of his love toward us. Maybe you find it hard to enjoy seasons of blessing and favour from God because you do not believe that you are deserving of his love. Maybe you believe that God does not delight in you, like you or enjoy you. Rather, that he merely tolerates you. If you do not believe that the Father truly loves you and loves to love you, then you will likely self-sabotage your ‘mountaintop’ moments.
You will do this in one of two ways. One, not give thanks to God. Two, run off the mountain.
If you do not believe that God wants you to have seasons of great delight and providence in your relationship with him, then you will not believe it was God that put you on the mountain when you find yourself there. Instead, you might attribute it to mere luck, or your hard work. If this is the case, it is most likely because you don’t have an identity that is rooted in the love of the Father toward you and so you do not believe it was simply because He loves to love you.
Secondly, we can become so afraid of the idea of the blessing, generosity and abundance of God that we run back down the mountain when we find ourselves on the top. Not allowing ourselves to enjoy the time, because we think that Christianity is supposed to be marked by struggle and discipline. Sometimes we can over-spiritualise difficulty and under-spiritualise blessing.
So if you find yourself in a season of great blessing and are having a real ‘mountaintop’ moment with God, just enjoy it! Give him thanks for it and worship and praise him for being such a good, generous and loving heavenly Father.
