What Happens When We Die?
Because Adam and Eve chose to sin, every person ever since will sin and eventually die. The beginning of Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages (payment) of sin is death…”
What happens to people after death depends on the choices they made while they were alive. People who decide they don’t need God will go to a place without God—hell. There won’t be any chance for them to leave. It will be an “eternal” death, which means it will last forever and ever.
The end of Romans 6:23 gives people hope, though: “but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Jesus came to earth over 2,000 years ago to die for the forgiveness of our sins. All we have to do to receive forever life in heaven is to believe that Jesus died for us and choose to follow Him. Even the criminal who was crucified next to Jesus was granted this gift in the last hours of his life (Luke 23:39-43).
Death is scary for the people who don’t follow Jesus. But for the people who do follow Him, it’s nothing to fear!
