God Can Give You Wisdom

DAY 3 OF 5

Wisdom Favors What’s Really Important

Which is more important: Video games or chores?

Ugh. Tough question. Games are fun. That’s what they’re designed for! Chores are, um, chores. They’re not meant for fun, but they do have a purpose. Watch this video for a little more on that.

God’s wisdom from the Bible teaches that too much of a good thing crosses into becoming a bad thing. Video games are fun. Fun is fine! But spending your time only on video games? No helping out your family? No fresh air? No stretching your brain to learn new things? Officially no longer good!

God’s wisdom teaches that it’s important to favor what’s important! Do what you need to do each day first: time with God, time with family, schoolwork, daily chores, eating healthy meals, and so on. Then you can truly enjoy your free time, knowing that everything important is covered.

Ask yourself: When am I tempted to spend time doing things that aren’t important before I get my important things done? What can I do to help myself take joy in doing what’s important first?

Challenge yourself: Write a list of the things you love to do for fun. Then, write a schedule for yourself to follow this week. Give yourself a time limit on your favorite activities. (Hint: You should ask a parent to help you choose a healthy time limit.) Follow the time limits strictly all week. At the end of one week, ask yourself these questions: What did I spend more time doing? How hard was it to stick to my time limits? Did I end up doing something different with my free time instead of only sticking to one preferred activity? Did I get my important things done? What did I learn from this experiment? How can I continue it?

Pray: God, thank You for helping me to find things I love to do with my time. Thank You that having fun and enjoying life are okay with You! Help me to learn to do what’s important first. In Jesus’ name, amen.
