Isaiah: God's Vision for Our Hearts

DAY 1 OF 6

The Woe of Greediness

The first woe in Isaiah 5 is the woe of greediness. At first, it may seem like the message of this chapter is to condemn owning a house or property, but a deeper look yields a different understanding. Back in the days of Israel, people inherited property that remained within their families for generations. However, there were also greedy buyers who would snatch up parcels of land to keep for themselves. These were the kinds of greedy business dealings that hurt others and displeased God.

We, too, should examine our lives and consider whether they are dictated by greed. Often, we are encouraged by society to exalt ourselves or boast of our earthly possessions. This is not righteous behavior. Greed is telling the world, “Look at me!” when we should be declaring, “Look to God!”

It should also be noted that one does not need to be rich in order to be greedy. Fellow Christians, even if we do not own many earthly possessions, we can still be stingy with what we offer others. Greed is not a matter of resources; it is a matter of the heart. Our lives as children of God should be dictated by the workings of the Holy Spirit and what he wants for us. Greed should not be a part of the Christian life in any aspect.

Lord, may we always point others to you and your perfect plan. You give us all good things. May we always be grateful for not only what you give us but also for who you are. We are so thankful that you call us your own.
