How to Be Free From Guilt

DAY 4 OF 7

Overcoming Guilt with the Word of God

For us to overcome feelings of guilt over our sins, we need to know the fullness of life that God has given us through Christ’s death. We received an enormous gift when we accepted the sacrifice of Jesus. It is not only a gift of forgiveness, it is the gift of abundant godly life, free from guilt and condemnation. As believers, we have become a new creation. The Scripture equips us with God’s truths that we need for daily, guilt-free living.

First, we need to firmly believe what the Bible declares concerning our sins. The Scripture tells us that when we receive Christ we are no longer condemned to death as sinners. God, the righteous judge, accepted Jesus’ death as a replacement for our punishment. We have been justified by faith and have peace with God. We are positioned in God’s grace because we are adopted as His children. When our Heavenly Father looks at us, He does not see our sin, He sees Jesus. This is the depth of the love of God. The only way we can be rooted in God’s love is by being filled with His presence and truth.

Therefore, we need to  study the Scriptures daily to be equipped to live a Christian life. The Bible compares this process to putting on the armor of God. We are told to buckle our waist with the belt of truth, which originates in the Scripture. Then, we are instructed to use the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. In other words, the Bible is both a defensive and an offensive weapon. When we read the Scriptures, we learn the truths about our redemption, salvation, and forgiveness. As we apply faith to these principles, they fill our hearts and minds with God’s love.

We can also use the Word of God to go on the offensive against Satan. When the devil comes to us with his accusations, we can rebuff them with biblical truths that state who we are in Christ. When he tries to tell us that we are unforgivable or unlovable, we can tell him that we are completely accepted in the Beloved. We can fight the feeling of guilt with the truth of the Word of God.
