The Glory And Beauty Of God
“It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”
At the cross of Christ, we see the full glory and beauty of God revealed. We see His love, His grace, His mercy, His kindness, and His forgiveness. We see His justice, His righteousness, His holiness, His wisdom, and His sovereignty. The cross displays the glory of Christ.
In Romans 3:26, Paul underscores that the cross demonstrates God’s righteousness, His upright and blameless character, because it reveals that God is both just and the justifier of believers.
First, God is just. He is just because he has been forgiving sinners since Adam, and now their sin is paid for. The blood of all those animal sacrifices from Adam to Christ could not really remove sin, but all those sacrifices would lead to the death of Christ, and His blood could remove sin. At the cross, sin was finally paid for, and therefore the justice of God was upheld. God is just.
But secondly, God is merciful. He is merciful because he extends grace to forgive rebel sinners. He is the justifier of rebel sinners, if they will only put their faith in Christ. So God is just and justifier. God is the God of justice and mercy. Perfect justice and endless mercy meet in the cross of Christ. And God is glorified.
