Day 3: Feed Your Mind
By raise of hands, how many of you have heard the phrase, “Garbage in, garbage out.” If not, that’s ok, but it is something to keep in mind, in regards to what we spend our time listening to, watching, and in today’s case, eating.
You may be wondering, “How does what we eat affect my mind and mental health?” I am so glad you asked!
Your brain, like the rest of your body, requires nutrients to function at its highest level, and we find many of these nutrients in God’s Word.
One of these nutrients is “fat,” to be more specific, essential fatty acids. Fat is important to God, and as we see in Leviticus, fat is used as a sacrifice, which offers a sweet aroma to the Lord.
Another area where a type of fat is used, is oil, olive oil in particular, where we see its significance in Exodus 30 where the Lord spoke to Moses to make a hin of olive oil with other spices to make a holy anointing oil that is used to anoint various holy places.
Lastly, we read in Genesis, that Pharoah, when he learned of Joseph’s reconciliation, told his family to eat the fat of the land.
Now you may be wondering, what can you do today to help renew your mind through eating a balanced diet. I would recommend beginning your day with a protein, since your brain uses around twenty percent of your energy each day. Next, eat healthy fats in the form of avocado, walnuts, and ocean-caught fish, like salmon. Lastly, help your brain by limiting sugar, wheat, and soy products. These have been found to take essential minerals, including zinc, out from your body.
Prayer for Day 3: Father in heaven, I thank You today that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. I thank You that you care about my mental well-being as much as my physical well-being. I ask today that You direct me to make wise decisions about how to physically renew my mind, and bless the food You have graciously provided. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
