Cripples at the Table
Mephibosheth was a cripple. Because he was the grandson of King David’s bitterest enemy, he expected that he would be killed.
However, when the king summoned him, David restored to Mephibosheth everything his family had lost, and then David gave him a place at his table with the princes and the mighty men.
King David removed Mephibosheth’s rags and gave him royal robes to wear, and he gave him a home with him in the palace. David fulfilled in Mephibosheth the words that he wrote in Psalm 23:5-6.
This is a story about the meaning of grace. It’s a story about a king and a cripple.
God is the king and you are the cripple. As David showed Mephibosheth kindness for the sake of another, so too, you are loved and honored for Christ’s sake.
When Mephibosheth sat with his feet under the table of the king, nobody could see that he was a cripple. That’s how it is with you when you dine at the table of the mercy of God.
All that anyone will ever see are princes, princesses, mighty warriors, and nobility. And that’s all that God sees as well. That’s grace!
Put yourself in Mephibosheth’s place. What is the most shameful part of your life? Do you realize that if you are in Christ, he presents you to the world proudly, as if your shame had never existed? What can you do to praise such a Savior right now?
