Jesus' Trial Before Pilate
Thoughts on the Passage
Two great things here.
First, Jesus gives His mission statement. To be the King and to bear witness to the truth.
He is the King. The Jews rejected Him but it did not stop Him from making that declaration. At times we think that just because His kingdom is not of this world that He did not declare Himself a king – He does. However, it goes much deeper – His purpose is to give truth. What is truth? That is a question that has come down through the centuries. Pilate himself asked that question. Pilate himself struggled with knowing truth. Jesus puts it very simply – listen to what He (Jesus) says. Here are some of the things Jesus said about truth:
· John 14:6 (I AM the way, the truth and the life).
· John 8:31-32(Abide in My Word… you will know the truth and the truth will set you free).
· John 16:13 (the Spirit of Truth will come and He will guide you into all truth).
· Matthew 13:12 (whoever has [hears and knows Jesus’ words], more shall be given and he will have abundance).
Second, Jesus walks in the will of God – and fulfills the word of God. He was to be taken by the Jewish leaders, handed over to the Romans, crucified and would rise again (Matthew 20:18-19). Jesus walks in fulfillment to the Word of God. There are lots of promises that we can walk in as well – some are wonderful [you will know the truth and the truth will set you free] and some are difficult [all who walk in godliness will suffer persecution]. When we walk in truth, then truth is fulfilled in us.
Application
Do you struggle with knowing truth? Let the words of Jesus abide in you and walk in them.
Can the will of God be fulfilled in our lives? Yes, we can see fulfilment just as Jesus did. Be careful not to try and choose which words we want God to fulfill! When we walk in His will, expect fulfillment of blessing and difficulty.
Time to Pray
Father, I need to take time today and meditate on the truths of Jesus’ words. They give life. They release hope. They produce blessing. They walk me through blessing and difficulties. That is the hard part. Still, by meditating upon His Word, we receive not only the great blessings, but we walk in a world where Your truth is rejected or treated with scorn and derision. That is hard to keep focusing upon the words of Jesus. Keep my mind there. Keep my mind off of the storms that rage around me and focused on Jesus and His words. Fill me with songs about His Words. Fill me with understanding through His words. Keep me walking today in His words. I ask in Jesus’ name, Amen.

About this Plan
At one point in our lives, we've all experienced the feeling of being abandoned, left out or betrayed. When people close to us are the ones that inflict these feelings, it’s even harder to overcome. In Plan 17 we see Jesus betrayed by those closest to Him. The different ways in which Jesus and those who betrayed Him responded gives us insight into different ways in which we may respond.
