[Acts: Inspiration For Transformation Series] The Power Of God

DAY 1 OF 7

Out of Darkness Comes Light

Keely H. Petty

The church is not immune to dealing with dark deeds in people who claim to be light bearers. Our culture is saturated with things that can woo people into allowing things contrary to the Word of God to guide their lives. The media bombards us with messages meant to draw us into a direction outside of the mind and heart of God. Acts chapter 8, tells us that the sorcerer Simon was skilled at dazzling the unsuspecting with his wizardry, drawing them into darkness and away from the light. Simon’s activities were so convincing that many onlookers said: “This man is the great power of God.”

Simon heard the good news and not only did he seem to be converted, but he followed Philip closely. He witnessed “signs and great miracles” and “was amazed.” Simon was drawn to this power that had superseded his prior acts of sorcery. Simon saw God’s power at work when the Samaritans received the Holy Spirit through Peter and John. Simon offered to buy the power, the authority, to do what the apostles had done, and this revealed his heart. He reverted to his old way of seeking to wield or manipulate power for his own purposes and not for God’s glory. Peter sharply rebuked him. Simon was still an unbeliever! He was still operating in darkness.

Sometimes when we lose heart regarding life’s circumstances, we may be tempted to rely on a Simon—something that promises comfort but carries us off into a dark, depleted, and depressed place. It’s in those places that we need to stand in the power of God and invite the light of God’s wisdom, will, and way to come in.

In addition to a promise that nothing will harm us, we have been given authority over all forces of darkness. The good news has the power to dispel darkness. Though the Scriptures do not give insight into Simon’s fate, we know that Peter challenged him to repent, to turn away from darkness.

Respond:

The church is challenged to go boldly into a dark world and share the light of the gospel with people from all walks of life. We cannot be afraid of the dark activities that people engage in. Every person God created has access to the gift of salvation. Let the Holy Spirit lead and guide you to those who are awaiting the invitation to become a child of the highest God. God wants to use you to expand the kingdom.

About this Plan

[Acts: Inspiration For Transformation Series] The Power Of God

Acts of the Apostles is a continuation of the Gospel according to Luke. It bridges from the Gospels that narrate the life and ministry of Jesus to the operations of the early church. It illustrates how the early followers, led by the Holy Spirit, began the work of fulfilling the Great Commission. In this 7 day devotional, we pray that you will be inspired to do the same.
