Things That Only Jesus Can Give You

DAY 5 OF 7

Only Jesus can give you eternal life

“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word

and believes him who sent me has eternal life.

He does not come into judgment, but has

passed from death to life.”

This verse is simple, strong, and emphatic. If one hears the Word of Jesus, the message of Jesus, and if one believes this message from the Father, then one has eternal life.

This is a clear statement of salvation by faith. How does anyone get eternal life? Believe the message of Jesus. Trust in Jesus and his work on the cross. Put your faith in Jesus. Belief, trust, and faith: all three of these English words reflect the same Greek term in the New Testament, translated in John 5:24 as “believes.”

Note that eternal life is given when one believes in Jesus. At that moment, he or she has eternal life. Eternal life, by definition, is life that never ends. If we have eternal life, we will never lose it.

If it could be lost, then it was not eternal life. It was conditional life or probationary life, but it was not eternal life.

To have eternal life means that we never come into judgment or condemnation. Elsewhere, the New Testament does speak of a believer’s judgment, but this refers to a judgment to assign rewards to believers. It is not a judgment about one’s eternal destiny in heaven or hell. Believers in Christ never experience a judgment about our eternal destiny.

That issue is settled the moment we trust in Christ. At that moment, we cross the Rubicon. We pass from death to life. We pass into eternal life, life that never ends.

So how do we get eternal life? Not by earning it. Not by being good. Not by going to church. No, we get eternal life by believing in Jesus to save us.

If you have never done so, put your trust in Jesus. Do it now! Breathe a prayer: “Jesus, I put all my trust in you to save me from my sin."

About this Plan

Things That Only Jesus Can Give You

The Apostle John identifies himself as the one dear to Jesus and the one who rested his head on Jesus’ breast. Being that close to the Master he must have seen what Jesus gave to the people during His ministry and registered them in his Gospel. Let us see in this plan what he says Jesus can give you. Like no one else can.
