Act Justly, Love Mercy, Walk Humbly

DAY 2 OF 3

The Liberian mother was holding her 7-month-old baby, Joanna. Her child had received a free surgery onboard the Africa Mercy to repair a cleft lip and palate. Suddenly, the mother became distraught—her baby had stopped breathing.

Mercy Ships' emergency medical team instantly sprang into action. The baby was stabilized and placed in the ICU. Doctors gathered around her bed—an extraordinary circle of mercy! The group of five represented four nations and three medical specialties. They were all volunteering their skills to take care of a sick child in Liberia—a country with little healthcare.

God’s mercy shows us that He doesn’t give us what we deserve, but instead he acts out of His great love for us. God has shown us how to live a life of mercy. In fact, in Jesus, God has shown us what mercy looks like when it’s lived out.

Being merciful and kind to people, particularly the poor, is central to God’s character, and so shouldn’t it be reflected in our lives too? Just think for a moment:  how did Jesus respond to the poor, the sick and the needy around Him?  He acted out of compassion. When people encountered Jesus, he healed and transformed them spiritually, emotionally and physically.

How can we learn to live justly, love mercy and walk humbly day by day? Our faith is not just a private and personal matter. Jesus calls us to be ‘salt and light’ in the world—to shine with kindness and to make a difference with our gifts and acts of love.

Call to action – Inspired by the passage in Micah, how will you love mercy, act justly and walk humbly today, and in the coming weeks?  Perhaps write down 3 possible ways and keep this note with your Bible or phone.
