Read To Me Daily Semester 2

DAY 45 OF 86

JUDGES 4-5:
We heard yesterday’s reading in Judges that around the time of Joshua's death, an angel appeared to the people of Israel and rebuked them for disobedience. In chapter 2, the author of Judges summarized the fickleness of the people. And in chapter 3 we quickly heard about Othniel, Ehud, and Shamgar— the first three judges.

PSALM 80:
In today’s poem, Psalm 80, Asaph pictures the Lord as a shepherd and Israel like a vine. It is no accident that both of these are also pictures of Jesus in the New Testament. This psalm is marked by the repetition of these words, “Turn us again to yourself, O God of Heaven’s Armies.”

GALATIANS 2:
Galatians 2 contains difficult concepts for many modern readers! It complicates things when Paul repeats the word ‘sinners’ with slightly different shades of meaning while mixing in irony.

Let’s pray together.
Our Lord and holy God, we have seen how the people of Israel kept leaving you, and you were so merciful to keep on rescuing them. We have seen also how this was a serious matter. Many in Israel lost their lives because You were forced to bring judgments upon your people. One might hope for better faithfulness from followers of Christ. But the Galatians quickly were swayed to follow another teaching— another gospel, but a false one. A significant component of that new teaching was motivated by winning human approval. So Lord, may what we believe and teach be based on your Word. May we value your Word above what is popular. May we choose to be right in your sight above being right in human opinion. We thank You, Jesus, that You gave yourself for our sins in obedience to the Father to set us free from this present evil age. Conformity to popular thinking will give us counterfeit grace and temporary peace. Thank you that in union with You we find true grace and lasting peace.
