Seeking Bread - the Bread of Life
Thoughts on the Passage
“Jesus, how did you get here? I know you did not take a boat!”
They looked for Jesus and found Him in Capernaum. The question is why were they looking for Jesus?
Jesus uncovers the real reason why they are looking for Him – He fed them for free. It is one thing to need Jesus because we need healing, and He is the only One who can provide that. It is another thing to seek Him out because He makes life easy for us. We see many people like this in the Church. Yes, they come as needy people. Many keep coming back because they want Jesus to make life easy; they want Jesus to take away the difficult things in their lives. They come because He can give bread anytime.
Jesus challenges the people – look diligently for things that have eternal value. It is easy to be distracted by things that have limited value. What does it take to focus on the eternal rather than what does not last? Believe in Jesus – the One the Father sent. This section talking about “bread” is all about seeing Jesus – the giver of eternal blessings.
Do not focus on the things we can get from Him that makes this life better; He has something that releases eternity for us.
What does bread reveal about my heart?
Application
Do I look for help from Jesus because He meets my physical needs? These are important, and Jesus wants to help us there. He wants to release eternity and things that have eternal value even more.
What do I need of eternal value that only Jesus can release?
[Here are some things – a heart at peace, God’s love for broken people, a faith that hangs on in the greatest storms, a hope that is not crushed by demands greater than our limits].
Time to Pray
Father, today I ask myself the same question, “what does bread reveal of my heart?”. Sometimes, I see that it dominates my thinking. I worry about my needs – needs that are real but focused only on this world. I have no time to focus on releasing eternally valuable things. I ask today for You to search my heart carefully – and reveal my own heart. Give me the bread I need today – that is what You taught us to pray in the Lord’s Prayer. Give me much more as well. Give me a hunger for something greater, something eternal. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

About this Plan
Have you heard the term “hangry”? It's when one is so hungry they let their emotions take over their responses. As soon as they've eaten, they return to normal. In Plan 6, we see some hungry people. Not only are they hungry physically, but Jesus sees their need is spiritual. Their hunger revealed their heart position more than anything else. What does your hunger reveal about you?
